ADHD is commonly missed in childhood and commonly misdiagnosed in adulthood. Both problems come from the same place: inadequate evaluation. At ATC Psychiatry, we take diagnosis seriously, which means a thorough assessment before any conclusion about treatment.

If you've struggled with attention, organization, follow-through, or restlessness for as long as you can remember — and it's affecting your work, education, or relationships — a proper evaluation can tell you whether ADHD is what's happening.

What We Evaluate and Treat

  • Adult ADHD, including cases never assessed in childhood

  • Adolescent ADHD in patients 15 and older

  • Inattentive presentation — the type most often missed, particularly in women

  • Hyperactive-impulsive and combined presentations

  • ADHD with co-occurring anxiety or depression, which is the majority of adult cases

  • ADHD with sleep disruption, where treating one improves the other

  • Ongoing management for patients already diagnosed and seeking a new provider

Our Approach To Diagnosis

ADHD is a clinical diagnosis with real criteria, and a number of other conditions produce similar symptoms. A fifteen-minute appointment and a symptom checklist is not an evaluation.

Developmental history matters

ADHD begins in childhood by definition. We ask about school experience, early functioning, and long-standing patterns — not just how you've felt recently. Adult-onset attention problems usually point somewhere else.

We rule out the conditions that mimic it

Anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep disorders, thyroid dysfunction, and substance use all impair attention and concentration. So does chronic sleep deprivation. Treating these as ADHD doesn't help, and stimulants can make several of them worse.

We assess the whole picture

Current functioning, medical history, sleep, substance use, and any prior treatment. If you have old records, testing, or school documentation, bring them — they're useful but not required.

Our Approach to Treatment

Medication is one option, not the only one

Stimulants are effective for many people with ADHD. Non-stimulant medications are appropriate for others, particularly where there's significant anxiety, cardiac history, or a substance use history. Behavioral strategies and structural changes matter regardless of medication.

Controlled substances are prescribed deliberately

Stimulants are Schedule II controlled substances. We prescribe them when clinically indicated, with appropriate monitoring, regular follow-up, and attention to dose. We do not provide same-day diagnoses, prescribe on request, or continue medications without ongoing clinical contact. If you're looking for a rapid prescription, we're not the right practice.

Ongoing follow-up is part of treatment

Stimulant management requires regular visits — for monitoring response, side effects, blood pressure, and prescription renewal. This isn't a diagnose-and-refill arrangement.

What to Expect

Your initial appointment is a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation lasting up to 90 minutes. In some cases a diagnosis is clear at that visit; in others we need a second appointment or additional information before reaching a conclusion. We'll tell you honestly which it is.

If medication is appropriate, we discuss options, expected effects, and side effects before starting. Follow-up is typically every two to four weeks while finding the right medication and dose, spacing out once you're stable.

Adults, teens aged 15 and older, and college students throughout Washington. Many of our patients are professionals, students, or parents who managed for years before the demands outgrew their coping strategies — a common reason ADHD surfaces in adulthood.
